Travel guide to Brazil

Fortaleza, CE: the complete destination guide

Fortaleza is the beach capital that serves as the gateway to both dune coasts of Ceará. This guide gathers what the town holds, how the year divides there, how you get in, where it is worth staying and how many days the place asks for.

What Fortaleza is

Fortaleza sits in Ceará, in the north-east of Brazil, and it is the beach capital that serves as the gateway to both dune coasts of Ceará. That sentence settles more than it seems: it says what the town has of its own and, by consequence, what there is no point looking for there.

What brings most visitors is concentrated in Praia do Futuro, Beira-Mar and Cumbuco. They are different things from one another, and that is why the town holds more than a day without repeating itself.

What the town holds

Sight What it is
Praia do Futuro The strip of beach huts to the east, where the city eats fish
Beira-Mar The central seafront, with a promenade and a craft market
Cumbuco The dunes and lagoon to the west, with kitesurfing and buggies
Canoa Quebrada The red cliffs to the east, about three hours away
Centro Dragão do Mar The cultural hub in the old centre

When to go

The year splits in two. From July to January, steady sun and strong wind; the season for kitesurfing and for the road. From February to June, the rain concentrates here, in short late-afternoon bursts.

There is no bad season in Fortaleza in any absolute sense: there is the season that matches what you want to do there. Whoever comes for Praia do Futuro and accepts crowds picks one half of the year; whoever comes for quiet picks the other.

Getting there

By air, an airport of its own, the largest in the state. By road, access is along the the BR-116 through the interior. The city is the base for both coasts: east to Canoa and west to Jericoacoara.

Where to stay

Base Who it suits
Beira-Mar e Meireles Anyone who wants the seafront with services close together
Praia do Futuro Anyone who wants beach huts and fewer towers
Cumbuco Anyone here for the wind and the kitesurfing

How many days

4 days is the number that covers Fortaleza without rushing, counting the arrival day as half a day. With less than that something on the list above falls away — and it is worth choosing what to cut before travelling, not once you are there.

What it combines with

  • Jericoacoara — the western coast, about five hours away
  • Canoa Quebrada — the eastern coast of red cliffs

Common questions

Is Fortaleza worth the trip?

It is worth it for whoever wants what the town has: the beach capital that serves as the gateway to both dune coasts of Ceará. Whoever expects something else usually leaves disappointed, and that is not the destination’s fault.

Can it be done in two days?

It can, by cutting. Two days fit Praia do Futuro and Beira-Mar. The rest waits for another time.
