Travel guide to Brazil

Maceió, AL: the complete destination guide

Maceió is the beach capital with the most continuous reef barrier on the coast. This guide gathers what the town holds, how the year divides there, how you get in, where it is worth staying and how many days the place asks for.

What Maceió is

Maceió sits in Alagoas, in the north-east of Brazil, and it is the beach capital with the most continuous reef barrier on the coast. That sentence settles more than it seems: it says what the town has of its own and, by consequence, what there is no point looking for there.

What brings most visitors is concentrated in Pajuçara, Praia do Francês and Maragogi. They are different things from one another, and that is why the town holds more than a day without repeating itself.

What the town holds

Sight What it is
Pajuçara The city beach where the rafts leave for the natural pools
Praia do Francês The beach to the south, split between a calm stretch and a surf stretch
Maragogi The coral coast to the north, with pools kilometres offshore
São Miguel dos Milagres The ecological route, coconut beaches and small guesthouses
Lagoa Mundaú The lagoon that separates the city from the sea and takes the sunset

When to go

The year splits in two. From September to March, steady sun, calm sea and good visibility in the pools. From April to July, this is the rainy season on the eastern coast; the sea turns and pool trips are called off often.

There is no bad season in Maceió in any absolute sense: there is the season that matches what you want to do there. Whoever comes for Pajuçara and accepts crowds picks one half of the year; whoever comes for quiet picks the other.

Getting there

By air, an airport of its own. By road, access is along the the BR-101 along the coast. Maragogi is about two hours north and São Miguel an hour and a half.

Where to stay

Base Who it suits
Pajuçara and Ponta Verde Anyone who wants a city beach with services
Maragogi Anyone here for the pools who wants to wake up near them
São Miguel dos Milagres Anyone after quiet and a small guesthouse

How many days

5 days is the number that covers Maceió without rushing, counting the arrival day as half a day. With less than that something on the list above falls away — and it is worth choosing what to cut before travelling, not once you are there.

What it combines with

  • Recife and Porto de Galinhas — the same reef system, continuing north
  • Penedo — the colonial town on the lower São Francisco, to the south

Common questions

Is Maceió worth the trip?

It is worth it for whoever wants what the town has: the beach capital with the most continuous reef barrier on the coast. Whoever expects something else usually leaves disappointed, and that is not the destination’s fault.

Can it be done in two days?

It can, by cutting. Two days fit Pajuçara and Praia do Francês. The rest waits for another time.
